COVID turning human behavior upside down.  At the beginning, it was like everyone decided to stop smoking cold turkey or drop every bad eating habit possible on January 1st. In the space of a few days in March 2020, life went from going at 100 mph to a stand still.  Kids were asked to go home and parents were asked to stay home.  Collectively there was nowhere to go.  Hours spent in traffic or bustling kids to activities were regained only to create a void in our days… “What do we do now?”.  The social gatherings we dreaded, yet attended obligingly, were cancelled, only to be replaced by ZOOM happy hours.  Surely this would all pass in 2-3 weeks?  Surely things will go back to normal and we will be rid of these countless hours of sleep, rest, and quality family time?

Zindagi ruk gayi hain, duniya do pal ki saas le rahi hain
Jis kashmakash zindagai se tang aa chuke the, usi ki raah dekh rahe hain

जिंदगी रुक सी गई है, दुनिया दो पल की सांस ले रही है
जिस कशमकश जिंदगी से तंग आ चुके थे उसी की राह देख रहें हैं

After a brief nosedive by the US stock market, there was a healthy recovery.  In fact, it was an opportunity.  By October, we were past correction recovery, and back in positive territory.  Yet it made no sense.  The US deaths and infection rates were exponentially growing, and nobody seemed prepared to make a sacrifice to reverse it, nor any line of sight to recover.  Heck, the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas gatherings to come would only make it worse.  Yet the stock market kept on compounding wealth for those who were privileged to participate.  How could a shrinking economy laden with uncertainty drive up indexes?

Patta nahi Quarantine hai ya Qayamat
Pandemic chalu hai, phir bhi stock market salaamat?

And then came the massive misinformation campaign from the right wing in the US. Here was a country that sent men to the moon and rovers to Mars, yet in 2020, 50% of American’s did not believe in facts and science, or lived in a parallel universe of alternative facts and truths. 50% of government leaders refused to follow and enforce basic guidance. So how do you go about convincing the other half? What rational could you use? It was like debating with people who believe the earth is flat. How often and how many regular people are armed to make and win that argument on a daily basis? Very few.. it’s a given fact and truth. And there lay the problem. Everybody thought their view of the world was right, and we no longer had a baseline of fundamental truths.
